The recent landfall of Hurricane Helene has left heartbreaking scenes of devastation across southern states of the USA. As Americans stand together in offering aid, support, kindness and prayers for the many citizens who have lost loved ones; communities in four states have suffered with power outages as the situation unfolded and caused widespread damage and destruction.

Home elevators are a wonderful addition to any residence, offering much needed convenience and accessibility, particularly for people who have trouble with their mobility. However, a common, and understandable question among homeowners is the safety of lifts during power outages.

First and foremost, having sufficient backup power available so that a home elevator can reach the nearest floor is very important for user safety in the event of power cut happening while the lift is in use.

In the event of this, all Stiltz home elevators are equipped with a battery back-up facility. This is supplied as standard with every residential elevator in our range. If needed this facility will respond in the event of power outage by safely descending to the lower level and allowing the user to exit the lift and wait for the power to come back on. This ensures that a user cannot become trapped in the elevator with no power and, of course, helps to ensure that a quick and safe evacuation is possible.

Stiltz Home Elevators also offer an additional option of an uninterrupted power supply. This is fitted at an additional cost but allows the lift to make numerous trips up and down until the main power supply comes back on.

All Stiltz elevator include an emergency call button which makes sure that an alarm can be sounded if necessary. Also, there is a phone handset located underneath the control panel, inside the cabin, which will enable immediate contact in case of emergency.

Every Stiltz elevator should be regularly serviced and well maintained. Ensuring a proactive approach gives the opportunity to flag up any concerns to an engineer before they cause any issues. As per the manufacturer’s guide, we recommend all lifts by Stiltz are serviced once per year.

Residential elevators support thousands of Americans to optimize the use of their space and remain independent in their homes, but having the knowledge that they are safe in the event of a power cut offers peace of mind. By choosing a lift with robust safety features, maintaining a good service history and ensuring awareness of how the elevator operates means nobody’s safety is compromised.
